Evolving research institute specializing in pearls

The Pearl Science Laboratory was established in 1978, led by the founder, Hiroshi Komatsu. Initially, our main focus was to conduct research on pearl cultivation at the request of pearl farms.

Later, we expanded our scope to include the publication of pearl identification theory and the development of pearl cleaning equipment, and in 2000, we announced the world’s first pearl grading system. Today, in addition to the research work we have been doing since our establishment, we continue to evolve as a comprehensive pearl think tank, supporting the planning and sales promotion of the pearl industry and holding educational seminars.

Over 30 years of pearl business! Proven track record recognized by public institutions

Since our establishment in 1991, we have been focusing our research on pearls, and this is the reason why we are trusted by public institutions.

We often receive requests for identification from public institutions, such as for the excavation of archaeological sites.

We also receive many requests for identification and cleaning from jewelers and art dealers, and we are the last resort for professionals when they have problems with pearls.

Goals of Pearl Science Laboratory

Quantification of quality

We have conducted research and development on pearl quality analysis and identification, and have succeeded in quantifying quality.

This makes it possible to conduct objective identification and appraisal. We also issue a certificate of quality.

Quality maintenance

Pearls are not fragile, but unlike other gems that are derived from minerals, pearls are produced by a living organism called an oyster.

Pearl Science Laboratory plays an important role in educating the public about pearl cleaning methods so that beautiful pearls can be maintained forever.

We also develop and promote pearl storage cases and pearl cleaning equipment/technology to maintain the quality of pearls.

In promoting these operations, we conduct our own research as well as joint research with universities and public research institutions on a daily basis and educate the public about pearls through various seminars and publications.
